BPP Partner, New Mexico Community Foundation has announced a record $5.8 million in grants during 2007, topping its previous record by almost $1.8 million.
The foundation awarded more than seven hundred grants in the year just passed, including awards totaling $825,075 in December. Fourth-quarter grants announced by the foundation included $6,000 to Honor Our Pueblo Existence (HOPE) in Albuquerque to help the organization build five traditional adobe ovens that will be used to bake bread for local families, supply food for feast days, and generate income. The grant also will support education about the importance of environmental quality and preservation.
Other grants included $5,000 to the Quivira Coalition to help restore the Comanche Creek habitat of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout, the state fish; $15,000 to El Centro de Igualdad y Derecho for its work in leadership development, civil rights, and advocacy; and $5,000 to the Santa Fe Mountain Center to support No Child Left Inside, an outdoor-learning experience for at-risk minority children at Agua Fria Elementary School.
"Support from the foundation's wide range of partners — foundations, individual donors, community organizations, businesses, and state government — makes our work possible," said NMCF executive director Robert Stark. "It is with their insights, relationships, and resources that we address short-term challenges and design long-term strategies to overcome inequity, strengthen communities, and improve life for all."
